Electric Propulsion
It is important to achieve the highest efficiency possible in converting electrical power from the battery into mechanical power used in overcoming resistance to the boat’s motion through the water – ie drag. Overall efficiency of boats with internal combustion engines can be as low as 15%. Of the 85% of energy wasted, perhaps 1/3 goes in mechanical losses – seals, bearings, gears and gear oil (the latter can absorb several horsepower).
With an electric drive, overall efficiencies of more than 50% are possible
